One of our all-time favourite authors, Anna James who wrote the much-loved Pages and Co series, returns with this first Chronicle in a brand new fantastical series. It follows twins Juniper and Rafferty as they navigate both the wonders and the perils of the magical world they live in. It's charming, exciting and fast-paced, I loved it - this series is bound to be the next phenomenon!
Everyone in Whetherwhy inhabits a kind of magic based on one of the seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. A rare few are Enchanters, with the wondrous ability to wield powers from all four seasons.
When 13-year old Juniper discovers she is an Enchanter, everyone is surprised. She is the less adventurous of the twins, more dreamy and wistful. But with excitement, and a nervous twinge in her stomach, Juniper leaves the family bookbinder and sets off to Thistledown Academy to fulfil her destiny at a school of Enchanters. Disappointed at being left behind and separated from his sister, Rafferty follows her to the city and joins a local bookbinder as an apprentice.
Following different paths for the first time, the twins learn to live apart. Juniper lives behind the school gates in a magical community, meanwhile Rafferty finds himself plunged into a world full of mystery and secrets. When dark happenings are slowly revealed, the twins must abandon their differences and reunite to fight the dangers that threaten Whetherwhy. With new friends to join them, Juniper and Rafferty find themselves at the centre of a menacing plot amidst night markets, mythical beasts and a secret society. Will their magic be enough to save them and everyone they have come to befriend?
Exciting, fast-paced, and full of characters you will find yourself invested in, this is perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Hedgewitch and Nevermoor. Junior readers, girls and boys alike, will fall in love with this new series chronicling the adventures of Juniper, Rafferty, and their magical friends. This has certainly been one of my favourite reads of the year - I raced through it and can't wait for the series to continue.
